Paul Kennedy presents a readable series of essays focusing largely on the strategic choices made by certain great powers in the years 1870-1945. His account of Anglo-German relations prior to the First World War are particularly well-enunciated (with an emphasis on the naval dimensions of their relationship) and he manages to challenge some commonly-held notions surrounding the competition between powers during this historical period. All in all a well-written account.
