Stedman's Medical Dictionary

An excellent reference book for the medical profession as well as for the patient who desires a little more understanding of the medical procedures. Stedman's has long been the leader in the field of medical books.

I have always wanted a good Medical Dictionary and this is it. It does helps you with the pronunciation of the words. It also explains a lot of breakdowns of the word.

Stedman's is a great reference book with lots of up-to-date information. It's a necessity for anyone involved in any of the branches of biomedicine or the allied health professions. The only disappointment is the accompanying CD. It is really worthless. It contains artwork and images that are mostly low resolution and add little of value to the written text. If the publishers want to give readers a useful CD or set of CDs, then provide a precis' with as much detail as possible from the entire printed volume in PDF format that can be loaded onto a PC or add some informative animations. But forget about the fuzzy still images.

I have been using this great dictionary since I joined medical school. Even now as a doctor, I still use it when I'm stuck with a meaning of a medical word. Learning the origins of the medical words can be a boon to learning medical language. It makes remembering medical terms easier.- Appendices including: Table of elements & their atomic weights, Comparative temperature scales, Temperature equivalents, Weights & measures, Symbols, Laboratory reference range values, Blood groups, Diagnosis related groups, Certified Regional Poison Control Centers, CDC Universal Precautions, AIDS - resources (By State), AIDS Hotlines (By State), and AIDS education & training centers (By region).- 27th Edition comes in 2098 pages, and was published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins company (great company by the way!), 2000.I wish there could be Stedman's Dictionary on PDA handhelds (e.g. Palm) in the future.I strongly advise medical students and other health care workers to use this invaluable dictionary. 10/10

As an individual who suffers from the effects of ALS I needed a quality reference volume to lead me through the vast amount of terminology I encountered. After reviewing all of the major titles available I settled on Stedman's because it is ehaustive in its treatment but still clear and consice. While by know means possesing the understanding of a medical professional I feel a need to stay current on all of the research and treatment developments for my condition. Steadman's has helped a great deal in explaining and demystifying complex terminology and procedures. I highly reccommend this for anyone with a serious illness who wants answers to complex medical terminology in an easy to understand form
