Gamechanger in Parenting

From the very first chapter, I knew that Start with the Heart would be a gamechanger in how I relate to my children. As parents, we all want out kids to behave. However, Dr. Koch points out that we must focus on building better relationships with our children rather than just changing their behavior. As our relationships grow, and our kids learn to trust us, obedience will follow. In chapter 9, Dr. Koch explains the difference between criticizing (pointing out mistakes) and correcting (putting right mistakes). The focus of this book is not critical but corrective. Dr. Koch doesn’t just tell you what you need to correct, but she teaches you how to put it right. At different times in the book, she takes on the role of teacher, coach, cheerleader, or referee, which she explains in chapter 6. Some of the topics covered include how to develop character in your children, how to bring about change, how to communicate better, and how to properly motivate your kids. At the end of each chapter she provides sections entitled “Things to Do” and “Things to Think About,” which give practical tips for implementing the principles discussed earlier in the chapter. Charts located throughout the book as well as several appendices provide valuable information in an easy to use format. This book is not one to be read quickly and then left on the shelf. Rather it’s a valuable handbook. To get the full benefit, one should read it slowly with highlighter in hand, and refer back to it often. I really appreciate Dr. Koch’s God-given wisdom. Her concern for kids and her desire to help families is evident on every page. I highly recommend this book to all parents! I received this book from the publisher to preview. All opinions are my own.
