Close to the heart of the problem

This book will help those close to men and women about to be deployed to faraway and dangerous places. It also brings into focus issues that may have passed unnoticed or unsaid about those who have returned, regardless of future deployment schedules. And it really doesn't seem to make much difference from which war or what theater. The book speaks with a universality that appeals to most levels of sophistication. While I suppose it doesn't say much new to specialists, it's a tremendous asset to the unitiated. My personal view is that some serious problems of adjustment will be reduced when the Army stops recruting high school dropouts, felons and those from the lower mental category. I hope to read soon about the profile of those having the most/least adjustment problems.

A "Must Read" for any current military person or family of...

Once again Dr Cantrell has bored to the heart of multiple deployment and post deployment problems ...We can never have too much information regarding these issues.. Dr Cantrell lays it out for even the least informed to understand and in terms that dosen't swamp the read with a durge techno-babble...This book should be "Issue" for all current military members and their families .... Must Read for Multiple Deployers

Downrange again? Me, too. It sucks and I'm ready to get back home... so I can start counting the days until I have to leave again! Will the war end any time soon? Will the ops tempo slacken so we can spend more time with our families? We can hope... but we should prepare to go back out again. This book helps. Dealing with both the stress of leaving and the stress of returning, Dr. Cantrell's third book on the subject is another home run. Giving an honest portrayal of troop psychology that few who've never served could ever grasp, Cantrell offers real advice on how to cope and how to help your loved ones cope, too. There's no easy fix for the effects of multiple deployments... other than separation from the service. If that's not an option or a desire, then consider buying this book to help you get through the rough times. Cantrell is an amazingly caring person who understands the situation and doesn't try to sugar coat it. She also uses her expertise to teach leadership at military bases to watch out for the effects of sending their troops back out, over and over. In short, the lady's got a lot of heart. Even if you don't want to buy it for yourself, check it out for your loved ones and use it as a guide to improve your relationships with them. Don't let deployment be an excuse to let your relationships fall apart! Matt Cates

Dr. Cantrell Nails it Again

Souls Under Siege is another fantastic book from Dr. Bridget Cantrell and once again I read from beginning to end in a short amount of time, devouring every word. I highly recommend her new book. I'm the founder of MarineParents.com, an organization focused on helping families and Marines get through deployments. Dr. Cantrell's knowledge and first-hand experience with TODAYS military personnel undergoing multiple combat deployments is apparent. Most combat Military personnel will experience at least two and often three or four deployments. How does this impact the family? What does this mean for the soldiers, Marines, and sailors? You need real answers and real help. This book holds the answers. The need to stay sharp and battle-ready doesn't dissipate when your Marine or soldier returns home from combat knowing he'll soon be doing another overseas tour. It's tough for them to feel like they're "home" when they need to stay sharp. They may pile the guilt of wanting to be in one place or the other instead of where he is at the moment on top of the mounting emotions of the deployment cycle. It's a tough world for our troops and Souls Under Siege can help. This is not a gloom and doom book; it's filled with real-life examples and tools for making the best of "deployment vs. home" emotions in this un-ending cycle. There are tools for transitioning back and forth between the civilian world and the deployed world, for the families at home, for the troops, and for the spouses of married troops. This book will help you sort out the emotions and understand what YOU can do to help YOUR love ones. You need to buy two of these books if you can. Buy one to read and pass it around to every member of your family. Buy a second copy for your loved one to read and pass around to his or her brothers in arms. No military family in today's society should be without this book.
