Something in the Water: A Superior Murder Mystery

Something in the Water is a rather enjoyable book which takes headline news and local legend a step further by asking, "What if?", and then applying fiction and fantasy to create an interesting and credible story. The main plot line is about the murder of an environmentalist whose obsession with barrels dropped into Lake Superior years before has made him both local legend and pariah. The plot takes some interesting twists and leads to the reader's discovery that . . . Okay, we'll let you find out for yourself. Something in the Water is Mike Savage's first book featuring Dave Davecki, a Superior Wisconsin police detective who is a likable, down to Earth character. Davecki is a complicated, yet simple man who often needs, "to contemplate, to free associate, to ruminate and obfuscate the obvious." His thoughts randomly jump all over the place, which truth be known is like most everyone else, even though few admit it, until the solution comes to him. He is a mixture of action and contemplation. This book is also a love sonnet from Savage to Lake Superior. The author's love for the great lake is obvious and is evident in Davecki, the man the lake chose to protect her. Overall a good read.
