Solomon loses his special tree in a storm and his uncle makes a mask from the wood encouraged by Solomon's experiences with the tree. This is a well written, moving story about losing something precious and gaining it back in a new and inspiring way. The illustrations are excellent and compliment the story well. It could be useful for teaching cultural awareness of the Northwest Coast Indian culture. I used it for engaging children in an art project of mask making. I think it could also be used to inspire children in the love and protection of the natural world.
