Life in the low country of the Gulf Coast can get pretty steamy. But life just got a lot hotter for Mike Connolly, a divorced, alcoholic, 50 something attorney. Usually content when he just makes it through another day, Mike's life takes a dangerous and unpredictable turn when a judge appoints him to defend an indigent man accused of murdering a prominent plaintiff's attorney. Just when he thinks that things can't get worse, Mike stumbles onto a conspiracy and finds himself in the midst of a complicated web of intrigue that will take a miracle to survive. Trouble is--Mike's fresh out of miracles. Or is he?
"Sober Justice" is a pretty good novel. I did find it kind of slow to begin with, but it did get better as it progressed. If you like legal drama, this book has much of that. The mystery was pretty well done and the plot does have some interesting twists and turns. The characters are fairly realistic. The biggest downside to this book was the ongoing geographical references. After a while I found them annoying. At first they were effective in setting the atmosphere for the places, but they got old fast. For example the author will write something like, "He drove downtown and turned left on this street then went six blocks and turned right on that street, then parked his car in front of the place." The book would have flowed better if he just wrote, "He drove through downtown and parked in front of the place." This was not too bad overall, but was annoying.

This is the first book I have ready by Joe Hilley. I loved it! It is fast pace and a legal thriller. It is very well written. I have read the second in the series and am starting the third. He is an excellent writer. This is a real page turner! Marilyn Fitzgerald Carlsbad, CA

Joe does a fantastic job of writing about southern characters and mannerizms to a T. Throughout the book you can see the transformation Mike makes and Joe does a wonderful job of telling Mikes story.

Move over, John. This is a page-turner from 1st-time novelist, Joe Hilley. The plot turns and twists and the interesting characters kept me up at night -- 'til I could reach the surprising end. Can't wait to read Hilley's next one.
