Snow Dog

When Link Stevens loses his new pack dog Queen to the wilderness, he's sorry to see her leave. He was sure this was the dog he was waiting for. Instead, Queen escapes to have her puppies in the wild, and stays there to feed and protect them. Soon enough, though, her strongest pup Chiri is facing the wild on his own. His family was slaughtered by a big black wolf in front of his very eyes. He vows revenge on the wolf, and gets about the business of survival. Meanwhile Link Stevens still struggles to make a living off his trapping, hunting to keep him and his dogs in food. He and Chiri are bound to cross paths one day, both ranging far within the same wild lands - and soon enough they do. For Link it is love at first sight - he knows the pup to be the offspring of Queen, and he knows him to be the dog he's been hoping for, all that is missing is the unbreakable bond between master and dog. The big questions are, will Link be able to win over Chiri - truly the dog of his dreams, and can they both survive the big black wolf, already bold and made bolder by a lean winter. A good portion of this book rests upon the life and activities of Chiri, absent of man. We see him growing from lost pup to cunning dog, and we see his personality and character evolve over time. I never quite felt the connection between Chiri and Link, and that kept me from a five star rating, but ultimately it's a great book with strong characters and an interesting survival story. There is a lot of violence, as the author pulls no punches when describing the law of the land out here in the desolate Canadian countryside. Link feels the loneliness of his isolation, and Chiri faces his own losses as well. I may have missed the man's best friend bond, but I certainly felt the pull of all things wild and the strength required to live among them.

This is an adventure story that boys and girls both will enjoy! Living in the wilderness has its challenges. It helps to have a dependable dog to share those challenges . This is a story of a man and his dogs battle with nature.

This boook was and is still my favorite book in my collection. This is a thrilling story about a trapper named link stevens who traps in the "Black Devil's" territory.The black devil is a black woulf who was shot by a Chirikov as a puppy and in time the black wolf has killed him. Link lost ha dog named Queen who was about to give birth to a litter of puppies.She dose and is killed by the black wolf protecting her puppies . Only the masked face puppy or Chiri survives . This story is one of the best

Thrilling, discriptive, and captivating. This is Snow Dog! This book is my second favorite Kjelgaard (next to Wild Trek of course). This is truley on of his greatest. It brings you into the wilderness along with Link Stevens, Queen;Links other dogs Yuke, Kena, Lud, and Tibby;and the famous son of Queen,Chiri.In this stirring tale you will find murderous wolves,bull moose,and a huge grizzly bear. When Queen runs from Link to have her puppies in piece she finds it very hard to raise puppies in the wilderness. Her masked faced puppy,later to become the powerfull snow dog Chiri,is the only one to survive the black wolf's attack. The puppy learns the wilderness and grows to be a huge wild dog. But one day that all changed. Read this thrilling story to find out the history behind the dog of Wild Trek, and one dog's grudge on a certain black wolf who killed his mother and brothers.

I really enjoyed the book Snow Dog, it was an excellent book about a dog/wolf pup who witnesses his mothers and siblings death by the black wolf. He knows that one day soon he will have to face the black wolf and only one of them will come out alive.

Snow Dog was a wonderful story of a dog's loyalty and courage in his final battle with his long-time arch enemy, the Black Wolf. Kjelgaard was at his peak when he wrote of the inspiring life and love of Link Stevens and Chiri.
