An intelligently written and thoughtful perspective

I am not a newcomer to thoroughbreds, so I thought that most of this book would be old news to me. And a lot of the information presented will be familiar to any seasoned bettor, but I found that Richardson's perspective is very helpful. He has a lot of regard for the intricacy of the handicapping process, and treats the subject thoroughly with plenty of case studies. He is skeptical of tip sheets and "handicapping systems," and his book is not meant to be read as though it is providing one. Richardson writes like a man with a lot of respect for the whole institution of thoroughbred racing; he does not pretend to have it all figured out, but he often distinguishes between worthwhile and "fatalistic" attitudes. This book is a great way for any handicapper to get re-grounded, and to discern "the point" of the myriad pieces of data used to bet wisely.
