Genre-crossing, interesting nonfiction!

It's hard to put a genre on this: it's a memoir, but also gives real facts and insight into this lifestyle, starting from the perspective of a newcomer who becomes (relatively speaking) an expert. The writing is excellent and brings to mind Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
