Prequel or companion volume to The Lawless Breed

After reading the Lawless Breed and the adventures of Ethan Grey, I found Showdown at Verity and discovered it is the story of how Ethan got started in the Pinkerton business, how Rangeley lost an ear, and how well Priam gets along even with a squint. We don't know Ethan's age or everything about his past life, just snatches and vignettes tossed in during reflective moments but Ethan is one of the typical but different western men. Very much an individual, even a loner, he gets along easily with others and they like him. A widower, Ethan can take women or leave them. He cannot always remember his deceased wife's face but memories of their life together are etched deeply. Yet at times, he is very much a cool killer although we get the impression that he would rather not use any of the variety of firearms he carries with him. Ethan is not a simple stereotypical hero nor are the plots of Mort's two books simple. He makes the reader think and question. Mort is a worthy successor to some of the great western authors and one can only wish he wrote more westerns than he does.
