Starts out well with what COULD have been interesting characters and plot, but falls away to nothing, and becomes disappointingly boring and predictable.

Three aristocracratic boys are imprisoned by their wicked uncle who intends to murder them in order to inherit. Boys are rescued by childhood friend and escape to separateluves, army, sea and London underworld. They return 12 years later to reclaim their place in society and reclaim their inheritance.
Rest of book then meanders rather predictably around the friendship/courtship of the oldest brother and their childhood rescuer, Mary. Presumably the two sequels revolve around the two younger brothers.
Don’t recommend this first book but will have to try to read the second, only because I have already
