Illuminating the problem of wife abuse, the wife of former powerful federal government lawyer tells the story of her seventeen-year marriage to a man who often beat her.
I was happy to find a book published back in 1987. I borrowed the book from a friend and wanted a copy for myself so I was happy to find it. It is an excellent example of abuse and the limitations of woman's possibilities in the 60's and 70's.
Shattered Dreams

This book was very good. Charlotte really went through some very hard times with her husband John. I am glad to hear she was able to break away and control her own life. I was shocked to read just how mean this man could be. I first saw this movie on TV some years back and it was good but the book is so much better. It goes into a lot more detail about her marriage to John. I hope that John has gotten help for his need to control everyone. Who did he think he was?
A Real Tragedy

This is an excellent account of spouse abuse written by the woman who lived it. It is a good example of how "white-collar" families are not immune to such horrors. While I found it very interesting, I also found much of it to be difficult to read because of what Charlotte Fedders went through at the hands of her cruel husband. It is almost unbelievable that any human could treat someone so horribly. She relates, in detail, many examples of the abuse she suffered. I highly recommend this book. It is one not only of the horrors of abuse but it's also one of hope.
