Heartbreaking stories, told with heart and soul

Another well-written book on which the TV series is based. Some of the most heart-wrenching stories from the first season or two of the show are presented here, but in more detail. The utter wretchedness of life in the workhouse is hard to absorb, to be perfectly honest. But there is again interesting historical background, and spots of light here and there, and lessons in survival, told with Worth’s usual wisdom.

Shadows of the Workhouse

An illuminating visit into the world of post-war Britain. A great read for social historians or for simply anyone who is interested in how people manage to cope with extreme poverty.
