Winner: Christy Award, Young Adult Peter Pan has crash-landed back on Neverland. But this is not the island he remembers. Desperate to rescue Claire and the fractured Lost Boys, Peter must unravel what truly tore his dreamland apart. But with each step, he is haunted by more of his own broken memories. Not even Pan himself is what he seems. Claire Kenton is chained to a pirate ship, watching the wreckage of Neverland rocked by tempests. When she finally finds her brother, Connor is every bit as shattered as the island. Claire may have pixie dust flowing in her veins--but the light of Neverland is flickering dangerously close to going out forever.
I recently began reading more fantasy/sci fi novels and I am thrilled that Kara Swanson's books found me. This book is the second book in the Heirs of Neverland series and the books must be read in order to follow the plot line. Kara Swanson has a gifted voice in recreating fairy tales and I felt totally immersed in the wonder and magic of this series. This book does have darkness that Claire and Peter must overcome but I loved that a little "faith, trust, and pixie dust" brought many things to light and wholeness. The author skillfully recreates Neverland where the reader can see and touch the island of magic.
The characters are deeply layered and amazing - even those who seem like villains of the story. Connor, Hook, and Paige have backstories and pasts that lead them to the decisions they make and these details blur the vicious edge around the characters. Peter is not totally innocent when it comes to why their home is fracturing; his desire to do good despite his past childlike ignorance and dismissal of others and his maturation through journey of forgiveness and repentance are heart-breaking yet encouraging and very real. Claire is such a paradox - fearful yet strong, compassionate yet filled with hate and anger at times, desiring love and acceptance yet pushing people away - and she is the true hero of this story as she gently guides Peter into the world of "grown-ups" where magic is still palpable and alive.
If you enjoy fantasy/fairy tale reimagining, you will totally fall in love with this book and series. Kara Swanson has another fan!
