Richly engrossing; much more to it than just magic

In Seven Spells To Sunday, Monnie Fitts and Bim Ross are two foster kids who are currently living with the same family. One day, they find a mysterious purple mailbox at the neighborhood junkyard and write their names on it. Over the following week, strange gifts appear in the mailbox each day for Monnie and Bim, and the two are caught up in an increasingly unnerving series of events brought about by their gifts. Sunday brings about the seventh gift, but not before Monnie and Bim must enter the most terrifying ordeal of their bizarre week. Although the cover of the paperback version focuses on the supernatural elements of the tale, the core revolves around the individual struggles of Monnie and Bim and their feelings of isolation and helplessness. The characters are presented as somewhat unlikeable to begin with, making the reader explore the reasons for why they behave the way they do, and, if nothing else, it becomes clearer why. Monnie and Bim go through similar journeys in between all the supernatural happenings and find that despite their animosity towards one another, they have more in common than a beat-up purple mailbox. This is a very riveting tale, and I liked it so much that I practically wore out my copy of the book, reading it over and over. I think it's a shame that it is out of print. Though elements of the story are dated somewhat (i.e. Monnie's classmate who is obsessed with the latest rock records), the overall tenor of the story is timeless.
