Well worth the investment

College seems more and more necessary to gain a foothold in the world. Now in a newly updated and expanded edition, "Sending Your Child to College: The Prepared Parent's Operational Manual" is intended for parents who want to make sure their children can get into college. From dealing with massive bills, to medical and safety concerns, to saving money in a situation where the term "poor college student" is all too often a reality, authors Marie Pinak Carr and her daughters give a solid toolkit for parents and students. "Sending Your Child to College" is well worth the investment for those who need all the help they can get, financial and otherwise.

Informative

Reviewed by Carol Hoyer, PhD, for Reader Views (4/09) The author, along with her daughters, has provided an excellent guide about going to college. Many of us parents are unprepared, as are our children. We think all will go well and yet we find there are many loopholes. This is such an easy-to-read and understand guide. Although we think we are prepared for our children to leave, this book gives great insight into what can happen and how to handle it. One of the most important sections I found to be beneficial was the section on health care. Little do many of us realize that when our kids go to college, and reach a certain age, they are no longer covered on our health insurance. This puts panic into many of us. The author(s) provide great facts, including how to get insurance for your student. Another section I liked was roommates. Many students are used to having their own space and now they are sharing it with 2-3 people all of whom have different personalities. It is important prior to moving in that you contact your roommates and see what they are planning to bring, their habits and goals. If you don't do this you will find problems and personality conflicts. As the author says, it is important to be honest and direct in your feelings about smoking, drinking, hours, and visitors. I also found the section on money to be very helpful. Today students get so many options for credit - credit cards. It is important to plan ahead and have good communication. Although I thought or hoped that many of these topics were talked about prior to going to college, I realize that that is not the case. "Sending Your Child to College" by Marie Pinak Carr is very direct and informative; it will be helpful to all parents.
