Book Overview

Through translations by two major contemporary poets and a scholar intimate with the Ponge canon, this volume offers selections of mostly earlier poetry --Le parti pris des choses, Pi ces, Pro mes, and Nouveau nouveau recueil--as representative of the strongest work of this modern French master.

In praise of the natural

I first learned of Ponge while reading a European poetry anthology (Faber and Faber), and, trying to understand the underlying meaning of the selected poem, I turned to the internet. There I learned that Ponge is known for his observational poetry (although not exclusively), and I fell in love with falling in love with the world around me through Ponge's musings. I started this book on my couch in Atlanta and finished it in a conifer forest in the mountains of North Carolina. I could appreciate the praise of doors and the praise of vegetation alike. If you dislike prose poems, you should pass on this poet, but I highly recommend him for everyone else.
