It was not easy for Elsy to work full time-time on an Alabama plantation. It was good that she became a free woman later and married one of Jake's boys. It was sad that two of her children died as babies, though the other four were grown and free,and made their own way around the world.I thought this book was one of the most interesting books I have ever read. The story in the book took place in 1836. The beautifully illustarated book presents a dramatic story that brings a period of American history alive. It gives a deep understanding of what life was like in times past.
