Book Overview

A book about real dilemmas that children face every day - full of warmth and by an award-winning author.

"It's crazy, starting at a new school. For days you feel so new and lost it's as if you've wandered into a foreign country where you can't speak the language."

This haunting story about Rafaella, the new girl at school who finds making friends hard, is a stunning piece of writing. With her strange name and sticking out ears she's different from the rest. Lucy is the first to tease, the first to call her 'Earwig'. Until a secret friendship starts, full of warmth and mystery.

Beautifully illustrated throughout by Jason Cockcroft, this is a modern classic by the winner of the Children's Book Award.

'A humane and honest story. It conveys so much, so simply and so well.' The Scotsman

'... a fine weepy with a moral, about the dangers of playground cliquishness and cruelty.' The Sunday Times

Real tear-jerker!

One book that I will never forget is Secret Friends by Elizabeth Laird. I read this when I was about 7 and I bawled my eyes out. I cried so much I couldn't keep reading, even if I had wanted to, I just couldn't see. I passed it on to my Mum's friend, Wendy, (because she caught me crying one night and asked why) and she admitts that she cried too. It's not very long, but it's a beautiful touching story.

Excellent choice for second language learners!!

I strongely recommend this book to second language learners who are tired of silly "detective" story. This story captured both your attention and your emotion. It tells the friendship between Lucy, a local girl and Rafaella, a foreign one. Since the story is told from Lucy's point of view, her struggle to overcome the racial barrier and peer pressure is portraited vividly. Readers just couldn't help forgetting Lucy when we undergo the same pains as she goes through.
