What is not to believe?

The book is well written but the ending is a bit ambiguous. It seems that the tearing down of OBI South and birth of another one in Floida Keys are missing. Robert Matherson tells how local politicians were out to get him. He may appear a bit paranoid and angry at times, but one might feel that way when certain rights and privacies are taken away from you. Matherson goes on about some of Long Islands' political history and corruption. He illustrates how it affected his personal life and business while neatly tying it in to how it affects our lives. Unfortunately past and current politicians have supported and continue to support allegations of corruption. The political accusations are plausible and well received. OBI South was indeed a fun place, something many grew up to enjoy, love and miss. It is truly a Long Island institution, too bad others didn't follow. The book lacks more stories and pictures of "LI's hottest nightclub." An interesting book for Long Islanders and to those who enjoyed OBI.

Blast From the LI Past!

Ah, the good old days of the sprawling OBI on Oak beach...this book took me behind the scenes, into the dirty dealings of babylon politics. I would never have known this carp was going on as I danced the night away under the stars on the beautiful Fire Island inlet. I guess he did a good job running the place if he lasted 30 years! That's unheard of in the nightclub business. I know the author was his girlfriend, not a party girl, but a serious person who ended up writing a well-researched account of things nobody would have known! Thank God somebody stayed sober enough to collect all the data & compile it into a really easy-to-digest & interesting story. Where's the end? How does it all turn out? Is there a second book? I hope so! Tell us how you conquered evil & triumphed! Better yet, come back to Long Island; we could all use some magical moments like the ones everyone on LI had growing up w/ the OBI. I'd be the first one to buy a second book!

Get over it

I was looking up the Oak Beach Inns web site and I came across this sickening review. This stupid lady from Long Island has no life to be letting a person get to her .I do not agree with her review nothing is true what she said about Robert W Matherson. The review said he's selfish :money-hungry who is hated by anyone who has ever worked for him.I am tired of people talking down other people just because they have came very far.We really don't know the kind of life Robert W.Matherson and who really cares. All we should do is worry about our own lives ans no one elses.I"ve worked for the man and I think he's great and could learn alot from his sucess.I do not belive he has no conscience and I do know he's not mad at the world so lady I hope you read this review and feel like a fool .P:s }When you're up in Keywest go eat some great food and don't forget to have the famous Long Island ice tea.

Outstanding book ! Bob tells the truth ! A must read !

After reading this book you will see what this man has gone through to get to where he is today ! You will see Bob Matherson differently , not only as a nightclub owner but as a man that will not give in to "any" corrupt political figure or anyone for that matter . He is a true American that will fight to the bitter end for his rights ! I know Bob personally for over 10 years and know first hand what these people have tried to do to him , and now myself and my brother Greg have seen this same abuse from town officals when we opened the "Baja Cafe" in Holbrook . As Bob told me himself don"t stop fighting because that is exactly what they want ! We have taken Bob's advice and are still fighting, I must say that thanks to Bob Mathersons advice we are still there and plan on being there ! You will learn a great deal from this book .

A Lifelong Long Island Resident

I found this book very intriguing. I am only 24 years old and remember seeing the "Save the Oak Beach Inn" bumper stickers all over while growing up, including on my parents cars. Last weekend I drove to the OBI and was amazed to find that, on a dead desserted beach road in November, the parking lot was 3/4 full. Bob Matheson must be doing something right... The book provides insight into the real motivation behind some political leaders. I would recommend reading this to anyone, especially someone who knows the area of LI or the politicians who ran it from 1970 to present day.
