Book Overview

Satin Doll is a witty, insightful, heartbreaking, and honest tale about romantic relationships, friendships, and class distinctions. Until that fateful moment when she was shot and left for dead, Regina Harris was living la vida loca with pimps and hustlers and using whatever money she had to get high and forget that she was living in poverty in Harlem. Now she's a college graduate and journalist who has turned her life around, living on the Upper...

BOTH ENTERTAINING AND REALISTIC

I usually read more non-fiction than fiction, but I took a chance and read Satin Doll based on a recommendation from one of my college professors. I loved it! Regina, Charles and their friends were just too funny! I swear I know someone like each and everyone of them. Especially that darn Pudding. I read the entire book in one sitting. I kept trying to put it down, but kept telling myself, "Okay. I'm going to read just a few pages more." Before I knew it the book was done. The language in the book is sometimes salty, and some of the deeds committed by Regina Harris aren't commendable, but I think both things added to the book. Regina acted in situations just like a real woman would act and react. But not necessarily how a story book character would act. Based on the review I just read by another reviewer, I guess that puts some people off. It turned me on! Satin Doll doesn't have a typical ending, but it certainly had an excellent one. Maybe I would not have made the same decision Regina did in the end, but I certainly see why she made it. And it was consistent with her character. So people who only want typical sappy fairy tale endings, stay away. Regina is sophisticated and poised, and insecure and cynical. Born on the wrong side of the tracks she's a self-made woman, fiercely proud of her roots, and quick to attack anyone she feels threatening. I love her! And based on her character, which Miss Miller kept consistent throughout, how could anyone really expect her to do anything different than what she did at the end? I didn't realize at first that Satin Doll was Miss Miller's first book, and I actually went back to the bookstore looking for more of her work. I was disappointed, but I'm now expectant. If this is her first work, I know it won't be her last. She's too good.

A Bright Future for Quinones Miller

Karen E. Quinones Miller has a bright future if she continues to create novels like this one. I really enjoyed this read. The characters were very life-like which enabled a person to relate to everything so easily. This book detailed both past and present relationships between women and how they change over time. Changes made because of experiences, the men in their lives etc, but the key is you cannot forget where you come from. This book was recommended to me by the publisher also, and I rushed to get a copy. I am glad that I did and I bet everyone else will to ! Continued Success !

This is Great Book!

Oh man! I mean I really loved it. The heroine in the story is someone who all women can relate to. Regina's been hurt in her life, and she's determined to be hurt no more. I love her relationship with her girlfriends. These women stick together no matter what. And I was really impressed with the way Regina stuck up for herself. She is not to be messed with --by man, woman or child. Her relationship with Charles is something else. I found myself rooting for them to stay together, no matter what - even if he was a creep. He's a creep that truly loved her. And Regina showed she could handle him just as well as she deals with everyone else in the world. The sex scenes, by the way, or something else! I would highly recommend this book to all women. And for all men, too. Take note, brothers . . . don't let us have to pull a 'Regina' on you.

Satin Doll -- Regina is one DOLL who is not to be toyed with

Satin Doll tells the bold story of a woman that women of color can identify with, especially if you are from the East Coast. Our Heroine REGINA uses her Heart of Gold, her Ancestral Wisdom and her Crafty Street Smarts to exact very Modern Day Revenges. A woman after my own heart who truly believes "Do Unto Others, Right After They Do Unto You, THEN, Tell Me How You Feel After I'm Through ! " A must read for all of us SUPERWOMEN who lead double lives.

SATIN DOLL A MILLENIUM SISTA'

The cover was a definite come on. It jumped off the shelf at you... BAM! If you didn't know what you wanted when browsing, this definitely drew your attention to it. By the time you got into the book (first chapter) you were glad that you made the purchase. Now, the women in this story are sisters that if you don't have for friends you might wish that you had them watching your back. They come across as gutsy and real. Friends that have had their share of troubles, come through them and been there for each other on the other side. They take you with them while they're going through. You feel their pain as well as their joy.The main character, Regina, is someone who's come up through the ranks. As in, been there, done that, I'm not going back. She doesn't forget from whence shes come. She lives with the memories and is a better person for it. This sisters experiences (the highs and the lows) have only made her stronger. The ending was not your ordinary 'run of the mill' ending. It made you wonder, what would I have done 'or' could I have done that. Hmmm.Satin Doll is written in a 'I know what I'm talkin' bout'' type of style. I can just imagine myself saying some of those lines 'or' wishing that I had thought of them first!Karen E Quinones Miller has done a superb job of putting together a firstrate novel. Knowing that this is her 'maiden voyage' we overlook the minor typos that do not interfere with the flow of the story and look to read more of what can only be referred to as real 'page turning excitement'.Kudos to you Ms Miller. I'll be looking forward to more of your exciting work. Proof of this is, I've passed copies on as Christmas presents. I don't want my friends to miss a page of this experience.
