easy to understand

This book doesnt waste time with all the little details and just talks about the major points. Want to be a MySQL guru? Then this books is NOT for you. However, if you are know how to code and how to use flat files then this book is for you and will teach you how to code your scripts with the use of MySQL database.Yes there are some typos like others pointed out but who uses the codes word for word from the book? You should know the basics of scripting language like Perl or PHP before buying this book. And you might want to buy a book about SQL. This book isn't here to teach you Perl, PHP or SQL so making small errors in those codes shouldn't affect your buying decision. This book teaches MySQL database nice and simply and I still use it as a referrence after 2 years of working with MySQL.

This is a good introductory book

Yes, there are annoying typos. Ignoring those, this book got me fired up about MySQL. This essentially free substitute for SQL Server and Access caught me by suprise. It seems to be supported and used by a lot of companies and is well respected.Until finding this book, I didn't know something this powerful for so little existed. The included CD provides an acceptable version of the database. Going to MySQL.com and CNET.COM gave me access to recent versions and additional utilities to work with MySQL.It's a good introductory book. It covers a lot of area. If you expect to read it and end up a world class expert, forget it. No book can do that. This is just a survey, and a broad one at that. But it does cover enough ground to give someone confidence in the program and make them want to try it with their own projects.

from Novice to competent in under 2 weeks

The book was easy to understand. Having never done any database development before, I was able to design and build an online property database, after just two weeks (evenings and weekends only - I have other priorities during business hours).I'm now building a database for an auction site.In terms of cost of the book and time invested, I'd say if you know nothing about databases and you want to learn; this would be a good investment.

Want to learn mySQL? This is the book to get then.

I am not going to say anything about the review from Jeffrey Pappen, because it's simply dumb, but.....As a developer I don't have time to learn something new every week, so by purchasing this book I've saved my self a lot of time and headaches. My work revolves around Microsoft related technologies and with the new releases of C# (C sharp) and ASP+ (Active Server Pages Plus), I had to learn mySQL quickly and that's what this book has done for me, it touch me everything about that can be done in/with mySQL, it's capabilities, etc.Now I can say that I know mySQL, which means that more companies will be willing to hire me.Good job, Mark Maslakowski.

Excellent Beginner Guide to MySQL

I come from the Microsoft world of development, and have been looking for ways to expand into the Linux realm. I had been hearing a lot of talk about the MySQL project and wanted more information. I feel that this book is a great tool for developers who either want to create cross-platform database solutions or are new to database technology. Also, the CD included with the book contains lots of goddies. Everything you need to get started (including MySQL itself) is on the CD.Thanks, Mark, for a wonderful guide to MySQL!
