Book Overview

"'Srulik, there's no time. I want you to remember what I'm going to tell you. You have to stay alive. You have to! Get someone to teach you how to act like a Christian, how to cross yourself and pray. . . . The most important thing, Srulik, ' he said, talking fast, 'is to forget your name. Wipe it from your memory. . . . But even if you forget everything--even if you forget me and Mama--never forget that you're a Jew.'

And so, at only eight...

I enjoy learning about Holocaust survivors

This boys story was not like any others I read . I actually question whether it really happened, the circumstances were heartbreaking and harrowing at the same time . It’s now a reading assignment for my 9th grader

Run, Boy, Run

This book was very interesting and exciting. Its about a Jewish boy who lost his family during the WWII. He lived with some other jewish boys until they all seperated during a gun fire. They taught him how to hunt and cook his food. For a while he moved from place to place in search for work so he could eat. There was a couple times when he was brought to the Germans but escaped. One day while working his right arm got caught into a michine. Since the doctor refused to work on his arm for being a jew, he lost it.Now the Germans knew him as the one armed Jewish boy. While running he still looked for work. Thats basicaly how his life went. So if you want to kno if he survived or not then I guess your gonna have to read the book and find out! This book was also based on fictional characters but on true events that happend back when Hitler ruled.

5th Graders review

RUN, BOY, RUN I LOVED THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT WAS VERY EXIDING AND VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN. NINE-YEAR OLD SRULIK FRYDMAN IS A JEWISH BOY LIVING IN THE WARSOW GETTO DURING THE HOLOCAUST. HE HAS TO RUN AWAY TO THE POLISH SIDE AND GET AWAY FROM THE GERMANS. HE LEARNS TO BECOME A CHIRSTAIN, AND STRUGGLES TO STAY ALIVE. THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR 5TH AND 6TH GRADERS.

An exciting account...

I read this to my children for our homeschool unit study on WWII. It is very exciting and exasperating. You think he is out of trouble but then he is in the ditch again! I would only recommend parents to read this with their children younger than the ninth grade. It has a couple of situations that you might be prepared to explain to anyone younger. Overall, I am glad we read it. My children are glad I read it to them also.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ

This is one of the best books I've ever read. Uri does a very good job telling about the children of the holocaust. The book is about a Jewish boy named surlick. Surlick loses his family and has to live by himself. Surlick meets many kind people who let him live with them. Surlick also finds out that not all the nazi soldiers are cruel to Jews. I liked this book because it shows you what it was like to be Jewish during world war two. If you want to find out what happens to surlick you should read the story. Some other books I recommend by Uri are THE ISLAND ON BIRD STREET, THE MAN FROM THE OTHER SIDETHE LADY WITH THE HAT, and the LED SOLDIERS

Worth Reading

The book is well written and tells a remarkable story. It's a good book to read along with a teen/pre-teen to talk about what the reality of war, anti-semitism, etc. The fact that it is told from a child's perspective makes it all the more compelling. A few themes are mature (a brief mention of animals mating, a glimpse of a romantic meeting between a girlfriend/boyfriend), so I wouldn't recommend it for a child below the age of 11 or 12, unless you are comfortable explaining!
