Rufus comes from a long line of witches, including his mother, grandmother and aunt. He never even thought he would have magical powers. That was until the day when Big Douggie was chasing him on roller skates. Rufus told him to do a double somersault and land on his butt. That is just what happened. Could it be a coincidence? Rufus began asking questions like, "How does someone know that they are a witch or Empowered one? What are the three basic spells, and at what age did you discover you were a witch?" Rufus tries out his powers and finds that he can perform nearly any spell he tries. But his parents pick up clues of his magic and warn him not to use magic without training. How can a boy keep magic to himself? He begins to read minds, and uses magic at school. When Big Douggie, the bully, figures out the Rufus is magic he promises to stop bullying if Rufus will help him out.
