Native American rock art - National Treasure

This short but comprehensive book is a good introduction of North American rock art. It divides the continent into 10 regions, namely, Arctic, Northwest Coast, Columbia-Fraser Plateau, Great Basin, California, Southwest, Mexico, Great Plains, Eastern Woodland and Northern Woodland. Each region is described in physiography and ethmology, rock art with reference to the color pictures in the second part of the book and basic styles. Reader is able to compare and contrast the different regions in the rock art styles. It is interesting to read on page 41 that circular complicated maze petroglyph near Hope villages near Taos, New Mexico and same basketry design was identical to that in Ireland, Cornwall and Italy. How this Bronze Age cult symbol ended up in North American rock art is puzzling. The color photos help reader for a brief orientation to North American rock Art. Mr. Grant urges that the prehistoric rock art sites are national treasures, to be preserved wherever possible - take pictures and leave foot-prints. Rock art is First American legacy, respect and value them!
