This book is a major page-turner. Po Threefeather, a young Pauite boy whose parents have died, lives with his Grandmother on an Indian reservation in the 1900's. Suddenly, Po's grandmother gets sick, and is rushed to the hospital, and Po is forced to live with his uncle, who makes him go to school , unlike his Grandmother, who lets him stay home. Po usually just works on his secret cabin and his tulle boat, but now Po is busy meeting people at school. Po meets an Apache boy by the name of Jim, who, along with Jim's group, is mean to Po. Once Po starts to forgive Jim, Jim gets Po in trouble, and Po is forced to miss a traditional Indian ceremony. At least Po has his friend, Dan, who has recently caused a calf's illness by not giving it enough attention, and since they're both having problems, they decide to run away, but Po is left alone because Dan chickens out. Po is left with one problem, being found. Po decides to check on his grandmother in the hospital, and afterwards, he makes his way to the secret cabin. The next day, when he returns from fishing in his tulle boat, he is filled with fright because he finds an unwanted guest hiding in the bed of his cabin. I recommend this book to people who are ready to read, read, read. This book would be great for elementary to middle school age students.
