Rev. Gates began recording with Columbia records in April of 1926. During this year Rev. Gates recorded 85 sides. In August through September alone Rev. Gates recorded 48 sides in New York. He recorded for Gennett, Banner, Paramount, Pathe, Okeh, Vocalion, Victor and others.His first big hit which sold approximately 35, 000 copies by the end of 1926 was "Death's Black Train Is Coming".
