I read this book when I was younger, and was struck by how the details of the character's lives made this story so relatable and realistic. Young Lacey doesn't remember the home of Bitter Creek that she and her mother Ann-called Campbell, fled many years ago, but both are now back with Ann's boyfriend David, trying to make a life for themselves.
