Book Overview

Professor Ericson and his colleagues followed the work of patrol officers in a large Canadian regional police force. From their direct observations comes a wealth of information, quantitatively assembled and qualitatively discussed, with insights into the nature of policing. This book reveals that the police are not mere 'referees' of our legal lives, blowing the whistle on our infractions. They are censors of certain types of possibly wrong actions...

A very informative book on police patrol work, even by todays standards

One would think a book on police patrol work that is nearly 20 years old is too out of date, and although this may be the case in some respects, it is still very relevant and very informative. I still see this book being referenced frequently in many academic sources, and I have heard many police officers (some who have not even read the book) speak of operational procedure which is mentioned in this book. The book involves a qualitative study of police patrol work in Canada. It is very detailed and well worth reading. Highly recommended. I believe the author has also published a similar book on detective work which I am now interested in reading. I am also interested in reading books that contain recent studies of police patrol work.
