Remembering Main Street: 2an American Al

Despite being written about fifteen years ago I would like to think that the author's description of these towns still holds some accuracy. Fortunately a lot of the text relates to historical detail which is true at any time. The US map inside the front cover positions the ten towns and it sort of covers most regions though Livingston, Montana is not too far from Sheridan, Wyoming and a huge chunk of the mid-West and Great Plains isn't covered but can Main Streets anywhere be too different? Ross has done her research on these towns and writes about history and contemporary life on Main Street, architectural styles and past personalities who contributed to a places success. The book is probably a bit more than half pictorial and a nice touch are the historical prints and photos with contemporary shots from the author. Another lovely feature are the homey traditions that pop up: a page of six photos show a children's Easter egg hunt in Tappan Square, Oberlin, Ohio or five of a park band concert in a Great Barrington, Massachusetts. All the photos have detailed captions. Overall a warm hearted tribute to (sort of) everywhere USA. It's a nicely designed book too and I see that copies can be picked up quite cheaply.
