A Great Underwater Identification Guide for the Curious!

I highly recommend this guide, as well as the whole "Reef Series" by Humann & Deloach, for Divers, Snorkelers and anyone who is curious about living things beneath the sea! H & D are highly respected for their ongoing work, identifying, cataloging and photographing underwater critters that many of us may never see! Reef Creatures, along with its companion books in the series are top notch. The authors are comprehensive in their scope, intelligent in their presentation -- they provide us with generous amounts of information to identify and learn about the various creatures, without turning their book into a scientic tome -- AND the photographs are gorgeous! As a diver, I find the whole collection invaluable, and I usually take this particular book with me on dive trips. I also take along its condensed, waterproof companion in my B.C. pocket, and can make instant identifications underwater! If you are interested in the creatures of the sea, don't hesitate about this book. Humann & Deloach are the leaders in this field, and their books are the best you will ever find for visual identification purposes!

The best Guide available

Sponges, jellyfish, flat worms, crustaceans, mollusks, star fish, if it is not a fish then it is in this book. This is the authoritative reference for reef creatures (other than fish) throughout the Florida, Caribbean and Bahamas area. The most complete book on reef creatures that I have seen, it is easy to use and beautifully illustrated. Each creature has it's own full color picture along with a line drawing that points out the defining characteristics of that particular species. With a plastic cover and the pages treated to resist water it can be taken to the beach or onto the boat without much concern about the water damaging the book. Each entry has complete information on the creature from size, depth, range and habitat to the level of concern that a diver should have for their safety around the creature. Whether you snorkel, scuba dive or engage in other activities around a reef, this is the best book to have to identify reef creatures. This book can also be purchased as part of a three part set that also includes the Reef Coral Identification and Reef Fish Identification texts, each of which is equally as excellent as the Reef Creature Identification book.

Indispensable identification book for divers

I have been diving for over ten years and I have made many small errors. Not having this book at the onset has been a very major error. Many times you come to the surface wondering what you have seen. Without this book you leave the reef still wondering about the natural contacts you have just experienced. A must buy for the beginning and advanced divers library.

The definitive guide for reef fish of the Caribbean

I visit family in St. Croix (US Virgin Islands) yearly, and I have looked at a number of books in order to learn the names of the numerous fish I see when I'm snorkeling or diving. This one makes identification easy, with beautiful pictures and the all-important "Distinctive Features" sections, which give you tips on how to distinguish one fish from the next. Make no mistake: this book is the easiest to use and the most comprehensive one I've seen. I'm online to buy the other two books (Reef Coral and Reef Creatures).
