Red Inferno: 1945

I've read every one of Robert Conroy's books, and each has been better then its predecessor. Red Inferno was a perfect combination of real historical facts, alternative history, character development, and story line. Some of the other reviewers commented that Conroy was approaching Harry Turtledove in status. I don't agree. I believe Conroy's latest work is BETTER! Though much more prolific in the number of alternative histories produced, Turtledove has seems to turn them out like the old Model-T Fords on an assembly line. Robert Conroy obviously puts a great deal of thought, research, and effort into his work - and it shows, especially in Red Inferno. 1945 - Red Inferno is one of Conroy's best alternate history novels so far. He handles that Western allies and the Soviets go at it after World War II with a great deal of authenticity. The only drawbacks are that there are no real surprises as to how the scenario plays out and Patton only plays a minor role in the conflict.

I have read all of Robert Conroy's books, and if you like history, and you like ruminating over "what might have been?", then you are missing out if you don't sit down with one of his novels. He is just as good at Harry Turtledove. The plotting is precise, small details are not overlooked (such as the FBI's almost absolute power during WW2), and most of all the main characters are ones the author makes you genuinely care about. I could say that I wanted more Patton scenes, or would have been interested in seeing more aerial action, but these are not distractions. They are more along the lines of as another reviewer wrote, wanting another 100 pages. In short, if you want to get lost in a great book, and regret having finished it, then pick it up!

I've enjoyed all of Robert Conroy's alternative history novels. They're very imaginative, full of historical fact slightly tweaked to make things very different. One gets the feeling that author Conroy is enjoying himself (I'd like to see 1968 get the Conroy treatment, starting with the Tet Offensive and Walter Cronkite reporting it to be the crushing enemy defeat that it was.) In Red Inferno 1945, an American move on Berlin at the end of WWII brings a devastating response from Stalin, and a new war--between the allies and the Soviets. The story is imaginative and very well done. Red Inferno 1945 is just perfect for a rainy afternoon. Conroy's other titles, 1862: A Novel, 1901, 1942: A Novel and 1945: A Novel are also recommended. They're all okay: my order of preference is Red Inferno 1945, 1942, 1901, 1945 and 1862.
