The book outlines the lives of several characters and switches back and forth between them. Each person's point of view is indicated at the head of each chapter and is marked with the year as well. The most central character is Iris, and what happens to her and her family loops back around, making us question what is it that haunts the bloodline: a curse, madness, haunted grounds, haunted buildings? Highly recommended reading for lovers of the great gothic novel.
