Connie Hall's experience as a historical romance writer shines through in her plotting used in this book. We have two men who are interested in the American game warden- a suave, urbane Englishman who runs a safari/ hunting lodge and is big on the local preservation board but hides a dark criminal secret, and a hunky big old good ole boy Texan who seems to be kinda shady but is an ex-Navy seal and she can't figure out. The Englishman becomes more and more menacing and scary as his true nature is revealed and her attraction to the mystery man grows more heated - much to her consternation. I loved this book! Exciting action, detailed descriptions of the African wildlife gave the book a wonderful sense of place. Books set in Africa is a personal hobby of mine- I collect vintage romances and novels set in Africa this one goes into my collection to keep! One note and recommendation- if you like to read about different places, the vintage late 1970s Harlequin series books in the Mystique line have some fascinating suspense novels set all over the world- including Africa and Lebanon when Beirut was know as the Paris of the middle east. Written by British and French authors the settings include much of thier countries' previous empires as settings.

Since this book has already been reviewed, I just want to say this is a great book! I couldn't put it down. Connie Hall's Ranger Wynne Sperling is a great character that you'll just love. I'm sensitive to the mistreatment of animals, and put off reading this book because some authors get too detailed, but Mrs. Hall treated the subject of poaching with just the right amount of tact to make this an enjoyable read for everyone. This is a definite keeper.

In the Lower Zambezi National Park, Africa, Zambian Wildlife Authority Ranger Wynne Sperling has diligently worked to shut down a major poaching operation. Former US Navy SEAL Jack MacKay says he is a businessman in Africa to enjoy a safari hosted by Hellstrom Tours. Sparks fly when they meet, but not due to an attraction as they have a martial arts encounter. Though Hellstrom has a reputation as a philanthropist, she suspects his company is killing the animals to sell as meat. She does not trust the Texan. Perhaps it was how well she held her own in their fight, but Jack is shocked that he so desperately desires Wynne that he is thinking of corrupting his mission because he wants her to see him as one of the good guys. However, he holds his heart and libido in check as he continues his undercover work, but knows that if his beloved ranger becomes endangered to hell with the mission, a feeling this dedicated individual has never felt before. She to her chagrin feels feminine for the first time and wants to believe he is not a poacher, but holds back judgment in him. RARE BREED is a fabulous romantic suspense thriller staring two dedicated protagonists who want to do the right thing, which means ignoring their attraction for one another. The story line is action-packed and quite exciting yet makes the case that the right and wrong of poaching is not just black and white as people risk their lives to feed their families. Interestingly the star of this excellent drama is Zambia and its people who are lovingly intertwined into this quality plot making the tale must reading. Harriet Klausner
