Dr. Dubos and Dr. Escande (a French physician) documented an interview they had about health in the context of history, adaption, environment, emotions, pharmacology, and other variables that are related and inevitably interact. The holistic and practical philosophy of the text involves medicine, science, ecology, people, culture, technology, etc, helping one see the big picture but also details that make the whole. It reminds one that the ultimatye situation of an adapting organism or host is just as important as the adapting germ causing illness, as related to the dymamic environment of nature, technology, and even emotions (physical and mental). The book is also full of stories and quotes that help understand the points the authors are trying to make (which are many and insightful). One of their points includes the fact that physicians often cannot heal or cure, but comforting and helping others is just as important, even if we can not measure it statistically speaking. A great book for those in medicine, sociology, philosophy, and history.
