Book falls apart instantly

Content aside, I’m on chapter 3 and my book is falling apart. Pages are literally removable with just the force of gravity. The writing is dull, but at least it’s clear.

All is well

Given all the emotional responses around the mistakes in the new edition, I was worried about ordering my copy. However, it just arrived, and as promised, it's the corrected version (the second printing) of the 6th edition. The changes to the style included in the manual are an improvement, particularly in the way electronic resources are cited. Additionally, the organization of this edition is better. Overall, I'm pleased.

Much better than previous editions...

Easier to read with a lot less pages. The 6th edition is a mere 272 pages vs. a whopping 439 pages in the 5th edition. This improves its portability and lap-use. ( I never could understand why a book that insists on 1 inch margins all around used 1.5 inch margin on the outer margins and left so much wasted unused space on the pages). Material has been streamlined to reflect more of the electronic resources currently being used and the more obscure material has been consolidated. The newly added chapters on ethics, the publication process and journal article reporting standards are quite helpful. Some reviewers complained about the elimination of the chapters on writing for publication. Since each journal has it's own specific criteria for manuscript submission, I don't consider this a huge loss. Still has lots of sample for various references (and even includes video blog sources like you-tube) and information on how to display data results (Including radiologic and imaging data like MRI images) So glad I bought the newest version, especially since it's currently half the price of the old version and a lot more user friendly and up to date. If you required to use the APA style, I strongly suggest buying this book.

Spiral-bound option

If you're required to use APA format and you only want to buy one book, this is the one. While some of the mastery guides to using APA might be helpful, this manual is the bible. It is not, however, Greek or Hebrew. It is a little intimidating until you get used to it and if you're doing much APA writing, you're going to get VERY used to it. A spiral-bound copy makes it easy to keep the book open to your place - the only thing that would make it better is tabs for frequently used sections (but you can add those yourself).

Boring but Required

The "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" is one those boring but necessary books that eventually will be on your shelf whether you like it or not. It is on mine. Those of us who make a living by combining words into sentences acquiesce to collecting various style manuals. You know the list: MLA, Chicago, APA, and for those with a journalistic or marketing bent, the AP. The social services, many teaching journals (not all), and of course, most psychological journals require using the APA style for white papers, essays and the like. Style formats make life easier on the editors you write for, and the APA does that job precisely. I fully recommend "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association," not because it will make you smile like a Barbara Cartland novel, but because academic journals editors will smile with a satisfied look while reading your writing.
