This was hawaiian folk legend, passed down through the generations by word of mouth and sometimes song and dance. The story is of the magical dog Pua Pua Lena Lena, an honored and revered animal in hawaiian culture and the feats he must perform to rescue the magical kiha pu, a conch shell that sounds an alarm if an enemy is approaching the kingdom, from spirits who have stolen it. He does all of this because the little old man who is his master requested some awa tea, which is the same as kava kava, and Pua Pua Lena Lena was caught picking the best of the plants from the royal gardens without realizing it! The queen orders him to return the conch shell and in return he can have as much of the awa as he likes. This was my favorite story as a child, and it comes with a little dictionary in the back of some of the hawaiian terms you find in the book. This is the copy I had as a child, a large hardback with thick paper it lasted through 3 generations of my family before IT was stolen! As soon as I have some extra money I'm going to buy it again. I'm 24 but some of the stories are important to keep around.

Pua Pua Lena Lena is a *great* book! It was my favorite as a kid in Hawaii, and when I grew up and gave away my childrens' books, Pua Pua Lena Lena is one of the very few I held onto.
