Yosemite National Park, created in 1890, was initially patrolled by the U.S. Cavalry. The first civilian rangers were appointed in 1897. They learned to cope with the wildlife, autos, patrols, searches and rescues, law violators, and natural disasters. This is the story of their lives: what they did and how they did it, often told in their own words in logbooks, diaries, and personal recollections.
