This is a terrific book! A must have for VB newbies.

I found lots of basic programming info in this book that either wasn't available in other books or wasn't easy to find. I'm a novice programmer and have learned so much doing the projects in this book. The tutorials are based on what you might be asked to do in the real world, are fairly comprehensive, and offer so much more than the little "hello world" type programs other books use to show programming techniques. Highly recommended for newbies to programming and especially VB programming!
The Best for Beginners

I used this in my High School class, and I didn't even need the instructor. Diane's methods are for the very beginner, and the instructions about when to click, got a bit annoying after a while, but it is the best book for a beginner that I have seen in a while. The user learns when to look ahead and see when she is telling you to put in wrong code to demostrate a point, another annoying feature, but easily avoidable. I short, this is one of the best books on VB for the beginner that I have seen.
I did better with this book than the teacher teaching it.

I took Visual Basic at our local community college and thankfully had this book to help me understand the basics of VB. The teacher, which was actually a very nice person, couldn't seem to get the students to understand the complexity of VB. If it wasn't for this book, I would have given up!
Simply the best VB beginner's textbook ever written!

Diane Zak is an absolute master at teaching, and it really shows in this wonderful introductory textbook for Visual BASIC 5.0. She uses case studies that lead the reader through the construction of applications and the use of a good amount of VB statements, functions, etc. When I started reading, I was brand new to programming. When I finished the text, I really had a sense of having learned an incredible amount about VB, and now I'm writing real applications we use everyday in our office.
This book was an Excellent choice

We used this book in my Intro to VB 5.0 class and everyone enjoyed it. The book starts off slow and walks you through some advanced programming topics, holding your hand every step of the way. And no fluff. The code used in this book was *Wonderful*! Very easy to understand and the real world examples made it fun to learn.I went from being an absolute beginner to building useful Active X controls, games, and a small database with Crystal Reports in a week! This book not only shows you how to create great software, but also how to make your programs look good. I Highly recommend it!My only regret is that the book doesn't go into advanced topics such as web publishing with VBscript, or building databases using DAO or SQL, which is a suprise since those skills are necessary in the workplace. However, I am looking forward to Visual Basic 6.0 and Programming in C++ by the same author.
