The major Pritikin idea is that the true way to permanent weight- loss i.e. maintenance of a healthy weight is through adopting mankind's 'natural diet'. This is a diet whose major component is complex carbohydrates, starches. And these are to be supplemented by lean meats, fish. But the bulk of the diet is to consist in whole wheat bread, brown rice, fruit and vegetables, starches which provide for the same weight half the calories that fats do. The Pritikin diet maintains that Americans eat far too many proteins, and that this leads to serious metabolic disorder. They maintain that only a carbohydrate- rich diet can provide the 'fullness' that will enable the diet to be sustainable over time. This all makes a lot of sense but I still do not buy it wholly. It seems to me that any diet after a long time becomes 'boring'. Thus it may not be the diet itself which is at fault but rather fickle, changeable, variable human nature which leads us after being satisfied in one way to hunger after new foods and new ways of satisfaction. So I myself believe that there is no single diet or regimen which most people will simply adopt , live by, and be healthy with for the rest of their lives. Nonetheless this book is a fine guide to better health through better eating and exercise. It has many good tips on how to improve our health.

As for diet books, this one is a keeper and also recommended by my cardiologist....
