A must-have book for anyone doing premarital counseling

Pitt provides an excellent resource for premarital counseling. This book gives a helpful overview and session by session guide for premarital counseling. Clergy will find the book particularly helpful, as Pitt does a great job with integrating the disciplines of psychology, family systems theory and spirituality. Pitt discusses various diagnostic instruments, including PREPARE-ENRICH, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which can be effectively utilized by those properly trained to administer and interpret them. The information provided in the book can be readily utilized in premarital counseling sessions with the engaged couple. In addition to serving as a helpful guide, Pitt's book serves as a timely reminder that getting married should mean a lot more than just getting engaged and showing up on the wedding day- the premarital counselor or pastor should help the couple get to know themselves better, as well as explore their values, personality styles and compatibility. If you counsel or marry couples buy this practical and informative book, you will use it. I would also like to encourage any clergy persons considering doing premarital counseling to PLEASE be sure you have proper training before you attempt to counsel couples. If you are not yet qualified to do so, make a referral to someone who is- you owe it to those whom you serve. It is a good idea to make premarital counseling- at least 4-6 sessions a pre-requisite to marrying a couple, in this way, you can help them get started on the right foot and enhance their communication in this vital stage of their relationship.
