Enjoyable Read

This is an entertaining story, set in a small town in New Zealand in the 1930s. The main character, Cedric, is a 15-year-old misfit with no mother and a father who has gone somewhat crazy. Cedric falls in with some shady older men. Mischief ensues when they set out to blackmail townsfolk caught in the act of a little hanky-panky. The novel takes a dark turn about 2/3 in. It's smartly written but with too pat of an ending for me.
