An impeccably written book about the power of prayer
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 14 years ago
This is a comprehensive book about the power of prayer. The authors begin by describing experiments carried out in the 50's with a group of people in need of psychological help, who each chose one of three different methods of obtaining such help - psychotherapy, random prayers, and prayer therapy. On conclusion of the 9-month experiment, the first group (undergoing psychotherapy) was deemed to have obtained 65% improvement, the second (using random prayer = petitionary prayer) no improvement, the third (undergoing prayer therapy) 72% improvement It is the latter "treatment", which was so successful, that this book attempts to teach us. It contains detailed information about how we should go about learning how to pray in the optimal way. The key factors are recognizing the four "trouble-makers" in our unconscious - fear, guilt, inferiority feelings and misguided love (hate), learning to cast out these demons, and then praying in the correct manner. Prayer should not be petitonary, focusing on the problem, but affirmative, focusing on the loving power of God. This book, published in 1957, is impeccably written and goes into absolute detail about how to carry out effective transformative prayer. I can't begin to express the wisdom in this book, but would highly recommend it for those eager to learn this optimal form of prayer, though it will need to be read a few times in order to fully integrate the process.
A page from The Manufacture's Handbook for Joy

This book was on the New York best seller's list in the 50's. I read it then. It proves to "seekers" that the principles laid down in the scriptures are practicle; that they are vital to a full productive life. One of the most important findings, to me, is that "the 4 demons that Christ cast out were likely (1) fear, (2) guilt (3) inferiority and (4) hate/resentment." The same type of research was done on prayer as that of medicine or other treatments. There is a God given amount of energy to operate our lives...physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially, etc. , when that energy is directed to confusion or oppression, it throws a monkey wrench in the works. It is a "how to" book. Two years ago Dr. Parker's findings were being used at the Cancer Center's of America in their treatment of the whole person. Thank God for these studies. Yea God!

Studying the Effects of Prayer
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
Prayer is both understood, yet mysterious. Some things about it are straightforward, others are not as easily perceived. This book seeks to answer some of the mystery behind prayer. It views the process of prayer and the people doing the praying. Results are viewed, i.e., what happened following prayer? The authors concluded, that "prayer, properly understood and practiced, could change the individual life anywhere, any time, at any age." They discuss the proper way to pray, that is, without using religious cliches, they talk about praying the solution, not the problem and expecting results. In writing about wrong attitudes, they note, "hate always impoverishes the hater."Any book that points one to Jesus is doing a worthy deed. This book, by talking about prayer, is describing a relationship with God. It makes you think about praying in the right way, with the proper attitude.
