Biography of Marceal Philippe petain, World War I French General and head of the Vichy France government ac the defeat to the Nazis in 1940 This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is a 1985 biography of Marshal Petain by the American Historian Mr Herbert Lottman. Compared with other books on the Marshal, this book is generally objective, although Mr Lottman has some leftist words to describe Vichy in the introduction. Fortunately, Lottman does admit that Charles Maurras (a rightist scholar which influenced Petain and Vichy) was anti-German! Mr Lottman praises Petain as a good leader in World War I. The research for the book is excellent, with the cooperation of Jacques Isorni, the defense lawyer for the Marshal during his trial in 1945. Unfortunately there are no photographs in the book.
