wonderfully spiritual and contemporary

I pray the office regularly and enjoy it very much. The experience keeps my mind on what's important...God's wonder in our lives. This newer work by the Carmelites is incredibly refreshing and leads us into a prayer life that lifts up to the Lord the relevant things of the modern day. I appreciate the "approved" works of the ICEL but this prayerbook speaks to the common person who lives in this sometimes difficult and challenging world. People of the Church are seeking a closer relationship with God...one that allows them a more personal experience. That is as it should be. God speaks to us in wonderful ways and not always in the words of over-educated, out-of-touch men that haven't lived a normal life in years. God bless all sisters and brothers who open themselves to the Spirit and share great gifts. People's Companion is one of those gifts.

An "alternative" Liturgy of the Hours

This is a complete "revised and expanded" of the 1974 edition of the Breviary (now known as the Liturgy of the Hours--the official prayer of the Church). The Carmelites of Indianapolis published this with inclusive language and an expanded selection of short readings from more modern authors, such as Thomas Merton, Edith Stein, Gertrud of Helfta, Dorothy Day, Richard McBrien, Rosemary Haughton, Mary MacKillop, and others. This is volume 1 of 2, roughly Christmas to (but not including) Easter. If you are not familiar with praying the Liturgy of the Hours, I recommend starting with one of the more official books, like the one-volume Christian Prayer, or one from the four-volume complete set.
