Mrs. Mackey is the most authoritative source on affairs in the Middle East that I have ever encountered. It is a semi-difficult read, in that the names and genealogies are difficult to keep straight, but she makes a difficult subject read like a work of fiction. A good if simplistic and outdated introduction to politics in some Arab countries. Those who already know much about the region will find this book a bit bland and at times orientalist. At times she oversimplifies complex realities. As long as you consider that she is a journalist and not a Middle East expert, this book is ok.
