A nice tale ...

This book is about Alex & Caroline right before the civil war. The back of this book is rather untrue to what the book reflected. Its mostly about a woman who lost her mother and is now to run the mansion of this tobacco plantation. Her father hates her because he is blinded by his grief for his lost wife and blames her because she was born, but he eventually see's he was wrong and forms a relationship with his daughter. Alex is from England and owns his own estates, but his father died so he herited the family fortune, his fathers wife (alex's step-mother), remarried Alex's father brother, and had David, a child Alex got very attach too, his relatives though do not like Alex one bit and ship him off to America and kill his closes and dearest old friend, and to top it off before Alex went for America he found out the woman he loved was to marry another and was pregnant with her soon-to-be husband child, all that turned Alex very cold and out for revenge to take back his fortune. He is broke and becomes overseer at the plantation. thats how he and caroline form a relationship. Now this is a nice story, except for the fact that Alex is a cold jack@ss (sorry no polite way of putting it). I seriously cant see why Caroline kept coming to him when he would treat her so harsly, use her for his pleasure then push her away, even after they married he never said he loved her and he didnt. I found it so annoying that even though it was clear he did love her that he couldnt admit it to himself, i would of love to see more loving between them other than the physical love Caroline let herself fall into. On top of that Alex as some weird power to heal people. now dont get me wrong its a neat little thing, but what does it have to do with this story, other then to fill in pages? The author made it sound like this mysterious native american power when Alex was not native american or even seen an indian ever ... this story wasnt to bad it was a nice view on the nasty things the civil war was before it started and how people were and the story was still nice to read.
