I was reluctant to read this book, but it turned out to be very good read. For those of us whose tastes for romance are somewhere between Anna Karenina and Danielle Steel, this is a book you will enjoy from begining to the end. I couldn't put it down and in my opinion, it is better than 90% of the romances that are on the market today. In England, Elise Sanderson is the widow and "retired" matriarch of a now floundering business empire. Then the doorbell rings and there is a new version of an old face from out of her past. The past revisited, takes you back to early World War II, when China was bullying much of the far East and was actively seeking to win the prize city of Hong Kong. When war vessels were not the only threat on the seas. Elise was a young woman caught in this dangerous world, and her story is set against a backdrop of impending war in this foreign country that she had come to love. Circumstances convene and into Elise's life comes the blacksheep son of a Hong Kong Tai Pan , changing her life forever. In the face of some devastating life-changing circumstances, this is the story of a strong, only-too-human, likeable woman, who faces some hard decisions. The end may have been a little abrupt, but it did not spoil my enjoyment of the book. I am looking forward to reading more of Janet Tanner and wonder why I just came across her.
