Book Overview

Max the dog-poet is back, this time in Paris and falling in love, in Maira Kalman's delightful picture book. It's happened. Before you can say "Pepe le Pew," Max the millionaire poet dog has landed in Paris, the city of lights. The city of dreams. Everyone is in a froufrou of delight over Max. There's Fritz from the Ritz, Madame Camembert, Charlotte Russe, and Pierre Potpurri, who wants Max to perform in his Crazy Wolf Nightclub. Amidst the enchantment and beauty that is Paris in the spring, something is missing for Max. Max has made his millions; when will he find romance? Our whole family loves this book!

It's just like a clever movie for kids that is aimed at the younger set but also includes lots of "inside jokes" for the parents. Other reviewers said it's too wordy for kids. My kids, though, have their own favorite lines. They say them right along with me when I read. I'm always happy when they pull a Max book off their crowded bookshelf. I finish reading with a smile on my face, and with my kids cuddled up next to me to...

ooh la la, I'm in love!

Maira Kalman is wonderful. I totally fell in love with this book. I shared it with the first graders that I tutor and they adored the zany illustrations and blushed when Max fell for the lovely Crepes Suzette. It was also a great way to introduce a little french culture. They were totally facinated and asked me to find more Max books. Please don't pass this one by because some of the vocab may be difficult for kids...

Ooh-la-la!

This poetic book is just one of the many things that expresses Maira Kalman's genious. I love Max's poetry, the symbolizm of what he writes. I have read this book millions of times, and each time I stop to read every little word on the page where a man has wrote poems all over the street, and to look at every little picture. Exquisite work!

My favorite book ever

Everyone needs a copy of this insanely splendid book. Kids will love poring over the infinitely perusable pictures and absorbing the exuberant joie de vivre of it all and adults will savor the language. "Alors, I must run. My souffle is sinking."

everyone is part dog...and max & suzette are part everyone..

this book rocks your world. Maira is a beauteous creator ofdream-color-scenes. A word-art-poet and a (dog)breath of freshair...the best is "max deluxe" (which includes all the max stories(3) but the latest India adventure). I highly recommend this to any age (i am 28) and actually the older the better, because the creative-refreshness that these books offer is the stuff that kindergarteners (and dogs) already possess and...
